Post Op Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Post Op Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique that is designed to stimulate the flow of lymph, a clear fluid that carries white blood cells and waste products away from the tissues and back toward the heart. It’s commonly used in the management of lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling due to a compromised lymphatic system.

There are two main types of MLD: regular MLD and post-operative MLD.

Here are the key differences between the two:

  • Purpose:
    • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): This is a general technique used to improve lymphatic circulation and reduce swelling in various conditions, including lymphedema, edema, and certain inflammatory disorders. It’s often used as a preventive measure in some cases to promote overall lymphatic health.
    • Post-Op Manual Lymphatic Drainage: This is a specific application of MLD that is used after surgery, particularly surgeries involving the lymphatic system, to help reduce post-operative swelling, minimize the risk of complications, and support the body’s natural healing processes.
  • Timing:
    • MLD: It can be performed at any time and is not limited to post-operative situations.
    • Post-Op MLD: This is performed in the immediate post-operative period and during the recovery phase to manage the swelling and potential complications that can arise after surgery.
  • Technique:
    • MLD: The techniques used in regular MLD are generally more generalized and aim to stimulate lymphatic flow throughout the body.
    • Post-Op MLD: The techniques used in post-operative MLD are often more targeted to the specific surgical area or areas affected by lymphatic disruption during surgery.
  • Goals:
    • MLD: The goals of regular MLD are to improve overall lymphatic circulation, reduce fluid retention, and promote general well-being.
    • Post-Op MLD: The primary goal of post-operative MLD is to manage and reduce post-operative swelling (edema) and minimize the risk of complications.
