What is a postpartum massage?

Pregnancy, labor, and birth put a lot of strain on a woman’s body, and postpartum recovery can be a challenging time. That’s why postpartum massage is a great way to help your body recover during the so-called “fourth trimester.” Postpartum massage can alleviate a whole range of issues, such as swelling and preeclampsia/eclampsia.

When you come in for a postpartum massage, your therapist will ask you about your delivery: how long labor was, what position you were in when you delivered, and if you had a C-section. They will also ask if you are breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, and where your baby sleeps. This information is critical in order to provide you with the best massage possible.

Postpartum massage can help with aches and pains, swelling, blood pressure, and can even improve your sleep. Just like after running a marathon, your body needs attention and care. Rapid changes during postpartum can cause discomfort and pain. That’s why, at Theta, we offer specialized cesarean scar massage, which can help with the discomfort of scar tissue, aid in the decision of a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) later on, and even help improve “the shelf.” We also offer breast massage, which can help with milk production and improve mastitis.

The fourth trimester is a crucial time to take care of your body. We look forward to helping you on your postpartum journey.
